Our 3rd and 4th grade students loved meeting a special new friend on May 4th. Officer Beltran of the Phoenix Police Department arranged for our students to experience what it is like to work with a canine designed to detect bombs and other explosives. Wow! It was fascinating! Salsa, the dog, was extraordinarily friendly and hard working. Many were surprised when she came in since they were expecting to see a German Shepherd or Doberman, and she was a German Shorthaired Pointer! She had a keen nose, knew exactly what to do and went quickly to work. Did you know that bomb dogs sniff and sniff diligently until they find what will earn them their reward? Well we didn’t either; but Salsa was well-trained and taught us a lot about obedience and staying on task to complete something important. Thank you Phoenix Police Department Transit Unit and Officer Beltran for bringing Salsa to visit Bennett Academy!
This year our annual speeches were delivered on May 13th. Many students impressed our judges with their preparation, content, and delivery. As usual, all students prepared a speech to deliver to their own class on an assigned topic. They used posters, tri-fold boards, props and powerpoint presentations to help engage their audience. Several from each class were chosen to present to a panel of judges, and overall winners were selected. This unique Bennett BEST SKILL helps build confidence and communication skills in students from Kindergarten on up. We are eagerly looking forward to next year’s opportunity to carry on this great tradition.
Tug-o-War, an obstacle course, basketball shooting contests, and scavenger hunts all helped make Field Day at Bennett Academy Venture Site a great success. Our K-2 campus held a Covid-safe Field Day that provided students with the opportunity to apply the many things they’ve learned this year in P.E. class. Coach Green taught them teamwork, basic skills, and endurance through games and activities, and then hosted a day of fun. This day was a rousing success and is sure to be on the schedule for next year!
